Conversational Analysis of "Conflict Talk" Exchanges

The presenter proposes that children engage in ‘conflict talk’ exchanges through which linguistic information becomes available to them. The presenter advances the notion that "conflict talk" exchanges may be instrumental in enhancing children's knowledge of the structure, meaning, and usage of language. Theory and research supporting the notion that conflict is an important catalyst for development of young children will be highlighted. Assessment strategies and protocols for analyzing “conflict talk” exchanges arising during conversational interactions will be explained. Published coding systems for analyzing “conflict talk” will be featured.
