Ultrasound Biofeedback for Speech Sound Disorders in Children

Ultrasound-based visual biofeedback (UVBF) enhances early acquisition of accurate speech patterns by providing real-time knowledge of performance and results. UVBF visualizes tongue shape and movement to guide precise adjustments, boost motivation, and promotes generalization and is proven effective for persistent speech errors (e.g., /r/, /l/). Despite falling device costs and demonstrated efficacy, adoption is limited by government regulations, training gaps, candidacy uncertainty, and lack of standardized protocols. This presentation synthesizes evidence on UVBF for children with persistent speech errors and offers practical guidance for equipment selection, candidacy, acclimatization strategies, and movement- based cueing/feedback. Video demonstrations illustrate techniques and clinical integration.
