Adults with developmental disabilities who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) continue to face substantial barriers across home, community, healthcare, and employment settings. Although AAC has been shown to enhance autonomy, participation, and overall quality of life, many adults experience late or limited access to AAC, outdated systems, inconsistent communication opportunities, and insufficient partner support.
This presentation synthesizes current research on adult developmental AAC users. Best-practice principles are reviewed, emphasizing rights-based and participation-focused frameworks. Practical strategies for embedding AAC in real-world adult roles and routines will be shared. As well as reviewing the impact of AAC virtual communication group, the session provides clinicians with evidence-informed approaches to improving communication access, inclusion, and meaningful participation for adult AAC users.
