Speech sound assessment for multilingual preschoolers: Practice framework, approaches, and resources

Speech sound assessment and diagnosis for multilingual children can be challenging for speech-language pathologists (S-LPs). With limited available resources to help address this challenge, the risk of misdiagnosis of speech sound disorder is high, particularly for children speaking understudied language combinations. To address this clinical problem, this seminar will offer a framework for practice, the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health (ICF; World Health Organization, 2025), which considers the child and family in the context of their environment and has been adopted by Speech-Language & Audiology Canada for its scope of practice in speech-language pathology and audiology. This seminar also describes different approaches (e.g., arts-based, measurement science, adapted scoring) that support culturally-responsive practices and cultural competence in S-LPs’ assessment and diagnostic efforts.
