Aphasia and other acquired communication disorders can have a profound effect on all aspects of an individual’s functioning. The speech-language pathologist (S-LP) plays a critical role in helping people with aphasia and their loved ones adjust to their condition. Throughout the journey, the S-LP accompanies the person with aphasia in addressing the various domains of functioning that contribute to how well they live with aphasia. Early on, this may involve delivering treatments to recover language functioning, while later in the continuum this may look like supporting people with aphasia in their own advocacy efforts.
In this session, a Life Participation Approach to Aphasia (LPAA) framework will be used to examine approaches, tools and techniques that S-LPs can use to support clients to live well throughout their aphasia journey. Through case examples and discussion, participants will explore strategies to help clients with aphasia achieve their life participation goals and maximize quality of life.
