Gender-Affirming Voice (GAV) Therapy: Balancing Function, Identity, and Wellbeing

Gender-affirming voice care with TGNC (Trans and Gender Non-Confirming) clients often focuses on goals like vocal comfort, stamina, and identity alignment rather than meeting binary pitch or resonance targets. Many TGNC individuals are looking for a voice that feels more sustainable and authentic in everyday communication. This session offers practical ways to approach assessment, treatment planning, and therapy techniques that centre the client’s voice goals, whether they relate to vocal health, confidence, flexibility, or expressive range. Through clinical examples and discussion, we’ll explore how to support functional voice use while integrating trauma-informed, neurodiversity-affirming, and culturally responsive practices. The goal is to help SLPs feel more prepared to offer TGNC clients care that is affirming, evidence-informed, and adaptable across settings.
