Language Matters: The Power of Language in Autism Care

The language health professionals use to speak about autism can shape perceptions of how autism is viewed. With reports indicating that S-LPs are often one of the first health professionals to notice developmental differences that may be aligned with autism and to refer individuals for diagnostic testing and other services, the importance of attending to the language we use is underscored. Drawing from her experiences in co-designing an early autism observation tool with community partners and co-designing SLP Maps (a guidance document for SLPs supporting autistic clients) Dr. Binns will share lessons learned and provide clinicians with a framework they can use to shift their language use within clinical practice in ways that promote client well-being and centre equity and compassion.
