“Walking Together”: The Importance of Communication, Collaboration, & Community to Foster Belonging

Our health system is one that is concurrently characterized by being progressively transactional in nature, depersonalized in experience both for patients and those working and learning in these environments, and increasingly focused on integrating technology and quantitative data that supports management strategies for care. This has been compounded by health inequities brought on by disparities in social determinants of health. All of this has contributed to the lack of relational focus and erosion of trust in the health system especially in communities disproportionately facing these inequities. An alternative health system to consider is one that fosters belonging by being relational and trust-based, that values communication, collaboration, and community.
