Literacy Champions: Language & Literacy as Mental Health Intervention

Language and literacy are protective factors for mental health across the lifespan, facilitating academic engagement and social-emotional well-being and participation in meaningful employment. Children who experience early adversity, marginalization and structural inequality are at a marked disadvantage for making the transition to literacy. The Literacy Champions Program is an innovative collaboration between SLP, teachers and child and youth workers, at one of Ontario’s largest mental health day treatment programs. This presentation will review the literature on language, literacy and mental health and share best practices based on the pilot years of the Literacy Champions program.
